Management is the act of coordinating efforts and manpower in an organization to bring about desired results while in the process ensuring efficiency prevails. The task of management is practically larger than many people would initially assume.
It’s a dream come true for anyone to become a manager. It’s a great feeling that may come with increased responsibility, renewed energy, personal growth but also some boost of ego, some stages of confusion, disappointments and frustration.
For those who would take management as more of a privilege than a call for more work, they could easily find themselves overwhelmed by the various stages of management. The initial stage of management is when one takes up the responsibilities as a manager in an organization.
Management stage one
This is a critical stage. However, with several new managers, the management seat is very comfortable at this stage. The time to report to work is normally after junior workers. This is normally after the official hand-over of the responsibilities to the new manager. The new manager is not yet absorbed into reality of management.
Researches show that at this stage, the new manager is not yet overwhelmed by any work, everything seem manageable to his conviction, but this is a critical stage that can build or destroy your future management efforts. It is therefore imperative to take this stage very critical by doing the following:
• Working towards understanding the nature of the organization, company or business empire that you are supposed to man. Consult other managers or the retiring manager so that you can get a clear overview of the position of the business that you have taken over.
• Use the temporary freedom while it lasts to interact with other people in the line of your work. Make your contacts or network at this stage. Get to understand the employees and other colleagues. Build a firm relationship at this stage by trying to understand more in depth about each ones responsibility in the organization.
• Try to evaluate your management skills and dreams you ever had about what you will do in case you get to management position. Strategize on how you would apply the skills to tasks ahead to make better results. Where you feel you’ll have weaknesses look how best to improve.
Management stage two – growth stage
At this point, the management seat start ceasing to be comfortable. Tasks starts following each other and you are forced to report to office a bit earlier than before. It’s worse if you had not prepared adequately at stage one by making contacts and good rapport with colleagues. Because, the better they already know you, the easier you will connect on serious matters of management. But in order to make the best of this stage, always ensure that:
• You are proactive; do not wait for situations to occur so that you can act on them. Counter them to correct them before they become eminent in the organization. Remember you’re the manager.
• Control the events and systems of the organization; do not let anything get you off guard.
Management stage three – maturity stage
This apparently is the stage of maturity in both you as a manager and the management itself in an organization. At this point, businesses start to realize bigger profits. The aftermath of good management is manifested. You are able to put complex things of an organization under control. At this point, a manager can predict the future objectively without guesswork - by reference to the growth curve of the business because he already has the graph on the fingertips.
At this point, people can look down on you as the one who really know the business and can represent it in any forum.
